To understand the beliefs, experiences and feelings people had around their online privacy, I conducted 8 interviews with men and women between 24 and 54 years old, making sure to select people of all levels of familiarity with the internet. I used empathy maps to identify personas and recurring patterns in the data.
Lack of visibility into what data is being collected when, and where it goes.
Feeling clueless and out-of-depth around their online privacy. Worrying about risks both known and unknown.
Lack of preparedness – how do you prevent bad stuff from happening among changing technology and regulations?
Feeling of being a potential target for the entire world – both companies and ill-intentioned individuals.
Stressful, confusing trade-off between benefiting from data-based products vs. loss of control over where that data goes.
To guide my design process, I translated the pain-points highlighted by the research data into design principles.
PROTOTYPING & USER TESTING
I generated and refined solutions by rapid-prototyping and user-testing each iteration. Through 7 rounds, I was able to identify solutions to the different pain-points and integrate them into a cohesive“one-stop-shop” app.
REFINING KEY PRODUCT FEATURES
With the testing data, I solidified the key product features that effectively empowered users with the skills to protect themselves online. I also refined the interactions that made these features most engaging, intuitive, and fun.
I connected the key features into a cohesive experience.
To keep track of how the different components interconnected within the experience.
VISUALS & VOICE
Once I had worked out functionality, I designed Koju’s UI to convey warmth and friendliness and approachability while maintaining a trustworthy sense of authority.
