INTENTION
That year, deep in lockdown, I decided to celebrate my birthday with an experimental creative project. I was just getting into 3D and AR, and decided I’d create my first AR filter.

That year, deep in lockdown, I decided to celebrate my birthday with an experimental creative project. I was just getting into 3D and AR, and decided I’d create my first AR filter.
PROCESS
I turned to YouTube to learn the basics about SparkAR, and how to create the effects I had in mind. I wanted something alien, that played with lighting and textures. As a dark-skinned person used to filters that cater only to lighter tones, I wanted this one to gorgeous on everyone, especially the mid to dark skin tones that are so often treated as an afterthought. In about 5 days, the filter was ready. I submitted it to Instagram and launched it on my bday!
