Shutterstock uncovered an audience they hadn’t been catering for: amateur to professional photographers in countries with limited technology and internet access. How do we support them earning passive income through stock photography?
SOLUTION
We created Shot – a one-stop-shop application allowing photographers to upload, share peer-to-peer feedback with others in their local community, and submit content to multiple monetized platforms in a few clicks.

GET BUYERS’ EYES ON YOUR CONTENT
As you upload photos, Shot automatically generates search-optimized tags using image recognition. Shot saves you the hassle (especially if English is not your first language), and makes sure buyers easily find your content.

EXCHANGE TIPS IN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE
Shot creates a local community of photographers around you so you can exchange feedback, minus the cultural and language barriers.

SUBMIT TO MULTIPLE PLATFORMS IN ONE CLICK
Uploading high volumes of content to stock photography platforms can be time consuming, especially if your internet connection is not co-operating. Tell Shot which photos you’d like to upload to which platforms, and then go about your day. Shot’s got you.

USER RESEARCH
To understand the ecosystem around our audience, we started with secondary research using Shutterstock’s existing data. We then followed up with quantitative (survey) and qualitative (1:1 interviews) to understand the challenges faced by users in developing countries.

KEY PAIN-POINTS
01
Lack of discoverability – users are struggling to find tags that will get their content seen (especially when English is not their first language). They worry the content they produce will just stay “burried”.
02
Lack of feedback – when users get their photos rejected by Shutterstock’s approval team, they have no guidance on what needs to be improved.
03
Upload speed – uploading images can be a lengthy process with limited internet access, especially for users wanting to maximize profits by uploading to multiple stock photography platforms.

CONCEPT GENERATION & REFINEMENT
Some of our initial concepts included an equipment rental website for users to rent cameras, tools, etc. at low prices, a skill-sharing platform, and demand-driven optimization (clear pointers on what kind of content is in demand / gets sold easily). Shot, our final concept, is the result of triangulating research results, Shutterstock’s objectives, and technical feasibility constraints.
